Details
The jhumka — India's most beloved earring — has been borrowed into the vocabulary of Banarasi weaving as a buti motif, its bell shape scattered across the silk ground in pure zari. This Banarasi Katan Silk saree takes that motif and gives it a refined, contemporary treatment: the jhumka buti is woven in a controlled all-over placement that reads as texture from a distance and as jewellery-like detail up close. A piece that rewards attention, as Bhavna Pandey's choice of it demonstrates.
In Banarasi weaving, buti motifs are woven individually into the fabric using the kadwa technique — each one formed by the shuttle itself, not added after. This is what separates handwoven Banarasi from machine-made imitations: the motif is inseparable from the fabric. The jhumka buti in this saree is worked in gold zari on the silk ground, with a contrasting border that grounds the composition.
