Details

The Gharchola is Gujarat's most sacred textile — traditionally woven for brides, its tie-dye squares filled with auspicious motifs in gold zari, presented at weddings as a symbol of new beginnings. At Vidhi Singhania, we have worked with master weavers who carry this tradition in its most authentic form: a Gharchola in which every square is individually resist-dyed before weaving, and the zari motifs are woven in on a traditional handloom. Chitrangada Singh's choice of this piece reflects the depth of cultural knowledge that makes her one of Indian cinema's most considered dressers.

The Gharchola is among the most labour-intensive of all Indian handwoven sarees — the tie-dye process alone takes several days before weaving can begin. The result is a saree with a visual complexity that rewards close attention: the interplay between the dyed ground and the woven motifs creates a surface that is simultaneously ancient and completely alive.
