Details

The Mughal court gave Banarasi weaving its most enduring design vocabulary — the buta, the jaal, the dense floral repeat that speaks simultaneously of nature and geometry. This saree carries that tradition forward with a skirt-style border that frames the drape like architecture: the buta motifs clustered at the hem in pure zari, drawing the eye downward in the most graceful way possible. Kalki Koechlin, whose eye for understated Indian craft is well documented, chose this piece for exactly that quality.

Woven in pure Banarasi Katan Silk on a traditional pit loom in Varanasi, the Mughal buta motifs in this saree are worked in pure silver and gold zari — each buta individually woven into the fabric, not printed or embroidered. The skirt border creates a dramatic hemline effect when draped that makes this saree particularly suited to photography and stage.
